During the Civil War, Herndon was a major place on the map. After the Union seized nearby Alexandria, Union soldiers used the agricultural town of Herndon as a settlement. After the war, many soldiers remained and settled there. These “newcomers” were responsible for founding churches, streets and Herndon’s first school in 1869.
